The first section of this page is just about how to join the SpotWalla Location pages, and assumes that you already have a fully working (new) SpotWalla account already setup. The later sections go into how to set that account up for those who haven't already done that.

How to sign up to SpotWalla - (a brief version)

SpotWalla is a centralised web based service, into which you can push location points (tracking points) which are collected and sent into it by a tracking device, or a cellphone app.

SpotWalla and the app which you might use on your cellphone are two separate and different things.

1. The first thing to do, is to sign up for a new, free account on https://new.SpotWalla.com - noting that this site is different to the old site which we've used in previous years. If you had an account on the older site, and if you didn't do anything to move it over to the new one, then you might find things easiest just to sign up for a brand new account this year.

Signing up for a new account is as easy as most sites, you use the Register button on the top right of the home page to create a new account. - Part of their process requires you to enter in your email address, then go and check your email for a confirmation link which you need to click on to activate your account - this is all pretty standard stuff nowadays.

Once you have your account, knowing and remembering your account sign-in details is critical, as you'll need to enter them manually into your cellphone based tracking app, so when you go through those steps, be sure to note those details down.

2. Find, and download the appropriate APP for your cellphone. There are different, recommended apps, depending on the type of cellphone you have. - Specifically we're covering options here for Android and Apple (iOS / iPhone) types of devices.
  • Android users - you will need to go to the google play store and look for 'Bubbler GPS New' - make sure the app which you choose has NEW in the name of it, so that it will work with the newer SpotWalla site - this is critical.
  • iPhone users, go to your AppStore and look for the app called 'SWTracker'.
Both of these apps are currently free and both offer the full range of 'Pro' level features.

Once you have downloaded your app, fire it up, you will then have to connect your app, into your SpotWalla account by entering in your (new) SpotWalla.com login details.

There are various resources available online showing the app's screens and how to perform this, step by step. - Please, take your time, read the screen on your phone and try as hard as you can to work your way through this.

Once you're done, both versions of the app, will show green connection status indicators.

3. You will have 'Start and Stop' tracking options in each. In your options, you will have some settings which control the frequency of the tracking points which you drop, I believe both apps default to one every 10 minutes. This is quite a long time, you'll want to reduce this down to 5 minutely.

4. In-Person riders, join in the location page, using the links at the top of this page, and the password which was provided to you by email on the 1st October by distanceriders@gmail.com

4. Virtual NI1600 Riders - you will want to learn how to make a 'Trip' in SpotWalla, which is a time-boundered window from which your location points are selected and displayed. - While this web page is based on the OLD version of the SpotWalla site, it's still one of the best, step by step resources available to learn from:
https://www.wiltshire.net/2019/09/15/spotwalla-tips-and-tricks-creating-a-spotwalla-tracking-history-and-showing-it-in-a-spotwalla-trip/ - When you submit your ride details for verification, you will be asked for your SpotWalla Trip URL.

Other resources:

The following linked-webpage, is based on  older references which helped to get people started using the OLD SpotWalla site, in previous years, links and app names have been udpated to for this year's setup, but screenshots are of the OLD site and apps... There has been no time to perform a wholesale review and update of that old resource specifically for this year's event, but it may be useful for some people: https://www.wiltshire.net/2021/10/01/getting-setup-with-spotwalla-for-the-nzdr-north-island-events-2021/
 - Sorry, there's been limited time this year to update those resources specifically for 2022.
