7:00pm on Friday 10 October 2014. This route features some roads unridden by previous 1,600km events, namely the Gentle Annie (Taihape-Napier Rd) as that wasn't fully sealed when the Rusty Nuts were running the Grand Challenge event. Also, the little foray into some Wairarapa back-roads and down to Ngawi, which represents as far south as one can go, on sealed roads, in the North Island. Rider Feedback
The inaugural NI1600 was a well organised and executed event from a riders perspective. Scrutineering was an education for bike owners.
We arrived in Turangi on Friday to see some familiar faces and some new. And the ride?, we had a blast. An unexpected journey, there and back! We got to see some special locations. On our way home today we rode again some of the route. It was that good.
A big thank you to the organisers, the scrutineers, the checkpoint marshals and especially the band of backroom helpers who made this event memorable. Thanks too to the other riders who are a great bunch of people. Hope to be there next time.
