Ohakune - Event Information

In 2022, after losing the Turangi Holiday Park to closure after two years where their business was affected by Covid related down-turn, NZ Distance Riders made Ohakune our new 'Home' for the North Island 1600 and North Island 800 rides - our primary event each year, commonly held in early October.

This page serves to provide some base level of information which hopefully won't need to change that much from year to year. For year-specific event-information be sure to check the details released each year too. Timetables for example may vary.

If you notice outdated information on this page, then please bring it to our attention and we'll bring it up to date, email distanceriders@gmail.com with any issues... - Thank you.

Map

  1. Rally Head Quarters is based at Kings Accomodation for the whole weekend.
  2. Check-In, when you arrive is accessed by parking out the front, and heading up the stairs into the Cafe area on the right hand side at the top of the steps. There you will be greeted by the friendly event staff, and given your rider card after being checked into the event.
  3. Scrutineering for your bike is around the back of the hotel block, up the side alley. You need to take your rider card and driving license with you. They will check your bike over, check the WOF is current and valid, check your license and mark these off as checked, on your rider card.
  4. You need to return to the main HQ desk in the Cafe with your rider card and have them marked off your passed-scrutineering against your entry. If you fail to do this, then you'll be called up during the rider's briefing. - At this point you're fully checked into the event.
  5. Rider's briefing and route reveal starts in the side-area of the bar at 7pm on Friday night. After the route is revealed anyone who has ordered T-Shirts can collect these from the front of the briefing hall. When you enter / pay for your entry you will receive a PDF receipt by email, this contains confirmation of your T-Shirt order. PLEASE check and know what you have ordered and paid for, each year we get people who don't remember what they've ordered, this becomes exhausting for the organisers.
  6. Rides start on the Saturday; before the group start for your ride there is a final briefing held on the grass area, near the station. There is plenty of parking for bikes along the main road below the grassy area and if it's wet there is some shelter to stand and wait under nearby, either on the station platform, or on the pavement by what used to be 'Hot Lava'. Pay attention to the event schedule for the exact start time of this final briefing.
  7. When the rides are started, depending on the size of the fields, we will call starting groups forward to form up either in front of of the station building (large overall count of riders), or down the side street. Pay attention at the briefing for those details.
